On July 17, 1955, Arco became the first city in the world
to be lit by nuclear energy! Electricity was generated by the Boiling Water Reactor III (BORAX III) at the internationally renowned Department of Energy
Idaho National Laboratory, and was switched on by local technicians. On that historic day, this safely harnessed
Atomic Energy brightly lit our little City of Arco for approximately 2 hours.
Arco’s Atomic Days: sponsored by the Butte
County Chamber of Commerce is held annually on the 3rd weekend in July. It is a community-wide Rodeo and Festival-like
celebration to commemorate this exciting day in our community’s history. Commonly both high school class and family reunions,
like to take advantage of this special time to hold reunions. There are a wide variety of things to do and
we draw folks from across America to our hometown. Please feel free to stop in
and enjoy our fun filled celebration, activities and revel in all of the history
Arco has to offer! Stay updated by “liking” our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/atomicdays.
